Have you been creating art all of your life and would like to start making money as an artist? Are you not quite sure how to start? Simply garnering exposure is not enough to make it as a successful artist, and there are a large number of details that you need to think about before you can start selling your art. It often takes years for an artist to become successful, as they find techniques that work for them. If you are interested in starting now, and bypass the learning curve, your best bet is to use a number of tips and techniques that work for many successful artists. Thus, I wrote this article about where to find useful tips and techniques that really work.

The Right Attitude for Selling Your Art

Many artists begin with a “I’ll see as I go and I’ll learn along the way” mentality. The problem with this is that it means that there is no preparation involved when you begin to try and sell your art.

It usually doesn’t work well.

However, changing your attitude is the start of a process that can completely turn around your career (or get you started on the right track). The work doesn’t end when you complete a piece of artwork; the business end of selling art must be just as complete and detailed.

The right attitude will not only expand your knowledge of the art world, but will also expand your knowledge of how the art market (or world) works, thus giving you valuable knowledge from which you can build on.

Where Should You Start?

Many people suggest hanging or displaying artwork in local businesses, where a number of people pass through. At first glance, this seems like a great idea; your art gets gains some exposure, and people should begin to become interested in your art.

The idea sounds great, but it rarely works out that way. Why?

The problem with this is that your audience (the people you are exposing your artwork to) aren’t all that interested in actually buying art. You’re audience is more interested in running errands or going about their daily activities. Yes, your artwork may garner some attention, but it is usually attention from people who rarely have the money available to them at that instant to buy your work.

Some of the best places to start selling your artwork are outdoor festivals and art shows. The reason for this is simple: Your audience is made up of people who are there for the sole purpose of looking at and buying art. These contain individuals who have money to purchase artwork, which is a big plus when you are trying to make a living.

So Where Can You Find Out How to Make Money as an Artist?

Many artists use different techniques that have made them successful in selling their art. It usually takes years of going through a learning curve and trying different things, adjusting techniques and discovering little tidbits that seemed to work for them.

However, there are several successful artists out there that are willing to share their secrets, tips, and techniques so that you can bypass that learning curve and begin making money as an artist now.
