How to Take Full Ownership of Windows Registry Keys. Windows 10 how to take ownership permission of a registry key. Step-by-step guide to take ownership and assign full permission on a registry key. It’ll become useful if you are trying to change or delete a key in Registry and getting an error such as “Cannot delete key: Error while deleting key”.

The Windows Registry is where all the Windows system and software configurations are stored. In fact, most Windows tutorials you find online require you to add, modify or delete Windows Registry keys. But sometimes, when you intend to modify or delete a Windows Registry key, Windows may not allow you to do so. This is because your user account or even the administrator account doesn’t have full ownership or permissions of that particular registry key. In order to edit any protected or system-critical registry keys, you need to take full ownership of that key.

To take ownership of a registry key, open the registry editor, if it is not already open. Type “regedit” in the Search box on the Start menu and pressing enter when regedit.exe is highlighted in the search results. You can also click on the regedit.exe link to open the registry editor.

Navigate to the key you want to take ownership of. Right-click on the desired key and select Permissions from the popup menu.

Click on “Change” button. It’ll open new dialog box. Now type your username and click on “Check Names” button. It’ll automatically convert the username to correct format.

Now select your username in first dialog box and check the “Allow” checkbox given for “Full Control” option.

That’s it. Click on Apply and OK buttons and you’ll now have full permission on the registry key.
