The job of the  Security  Officer is an important function of private industry especially retail and plant  security .  Security  Officer Employment is a meaningful career offering numerous opportunities for persons seeking to get into a law enforcement role without the inherent dangers associated with regular police and Sheriff’s duties.


These Officers find themselves protecting property and persons in challenging environments such as: mall  security , plant, store, private, and personal  security  roles. Primarily, the job of the  Security  Officer is to observe and report any unusual or suspicious activity. Their job however is not to be policemen nor Sheriff’s deputies. They are not equipped nor trained to be full fledged deputized officers, however, they are required to undergo a certain amount of training designed to protect themselves and others in the event of emergencies when the regular police and sheriff’s deputies cannot respond in time.


The training the potential  Security  Officer is exposed to includes a number of law enforcement specialties. In most cases they must qualify in firearms and first aid safety and be certified and licensed in the various states they will be working in. Many times they will be required to have some type of clearance especially if they will be exposed to sensitive documents and or materials. In order to obtain a  security  clearance, a thorough background investigation will be conducted on the candidate and the person must meet the criteria for the type of clearance they will need for the position. They must be free of any kind of arrest or police record. The higher type of clearance required the more stringent the criteria for that clearance. If the position is in a government facility, generally a Secret or Top Secret Clearance will be needed for the job.


Salary is different for each post the  Security  Officer is assigned to. Usually the higher the risk, the more pay. If the post is an armed one, the pay will be substantially higher than an unarmed post. The types of duties required and the shifts worked determine how much pay the person can expect to receive. A day shift will be paid less than a swing or graveyard shift. Regardless of the duties or shift worked, the  Security  Officer makes substantially less than a regular Police Officer or Sheriff’s Deputy however, the pay is attractive enough and the opportunities for advancement open that the career can be a rewarding and lucrative one.


The key to any  Security  Officer Employment position is to be alert, vigilant, respectful, protective, and ready to respond at a moment’s notice to any situation keeping in mind the safety of others as well as oneself. Together working hand-in-hand with regular law enforcement, the  Security  Officer is a vital necessary deterrent to crime and a helping hand for the safety of the client they work for and the community.
