Here are 10 essential steps for writing emails that get dollar-multiplying results. Frequency of emails is important – send weekly or fortnightly – monthly is not enough! Use your marketing emails to build rapport and relationship with your customers and prospects. Email is a powerful, cheap marketing tool to turn strangers into friends, and friends into customers. Email marketing works for EVERY kind of business to inform, inspire and engage new orders, repeat orders and referrals.

As a guide, you want to be generating a minimum of $1 per month, for every subscriber you have. Each time you send a well-crafted email (right message, right offer, right timing), you can expect to generate $1 per subscriber. Do the numbers for you list now: What would you expect to generate? Of course it also depends on the unit PRICE of your product/service. Your aim is to grow both the VALUE per subscriber and the NUMBER of subscribers over time. But as basic guide you can expect to generate 100 subscribers = $100 of revenue per email, 500 subscribers = $500 of revenue per email, 1,000 subscribers = $1,000, 2,000 subscribers = $2,000. You get the idea!

Here are ten top tips for email marketing that converts into revenue for your business:

1. Decide your primary objective. Emails get better results when they have one message rather than many messages. This is true of ALL kinds of marketing mediums. The confused mind takes no action, to get clear on what you want your reader to do BEFORE you write the email itself.

2. Benefits, benefits, benefits. Share emotional benefits. Tell an attention-grabbing CASE STUDY, story, scenario. Describe the BENEFITS rather than features.

3. Focus on the READER with words like ‘you’ or ‘yours’. Avoid using: us, me, I. Make the email all about the reader (customer-focused) rather than yourself. The reader is only thinking: What’s in it for me (WIIIFM?)

4. Have a powerful Call-to-Action. This is what you want the reader to do! How do you want them to respond? Do you want them to Click Here, Order Now, Call this number, Register toda…. You are influencing them to TAKE ACTION now… J Make it loud and clear…! Be specific…

5. Use scarcity to prompt action. People fear the pain of losing something more than the pleasure of gaining something… (most of the time!)… so you might make your offers: time limited, strictly limited offer, order by 5pm Friday, today only, first 10 orders only… (you get the idea..!)

6. Okay now you’ve done your thinking and brainstorming, it’s time to write the email. Write the beginning, middle and end of the email…Keep each to only 1 paragraph when starting out writing email campaigns (makes you write faster AND get to the point)… you should never have to make the reader SCROLL to see the offer. The offer should be immediate (at the beginning) and always REPEAT the offer at the end…

7. Make the Subject line MASSIVELY compelling, curious and irresistible to open! The email Subject Line is the make or break to inspire busy people to pause and read what you’ve got to say. You’ve got 3 seconds to grab their attention. Make it a subject line that will stand out from the many emails people get every day…(stay authentic… no swear words…do a spam check… )

8. Test & Review before sending it! Test all the links in the email work. Have 2 other people read the offer and grammar, before you send it out and for them to test the links too. Those 10 minutes can save you a lot of embarrassment if you mistyped an email address, price or your own company telephone number…!

9. Send the email ideally between Mon – Thurs 11am – 3pm for best responses especially from office-based customers. Timing can be everything for marketing. Obviously if it’s Friday morning and you want to generate more orders before the weekend, you can send out a MUST-READ email announcement with a crazy offer on a Friday or order before Sunday midnight (the budget airlines use this tactic frequently). Be ready to answer the emails, telephone and fulfill the orders fast. If you can’t fulfill the order immediately, at least acknowledge the order with an email, courtesy call or customer care call.

10. Measure and Refine. Two days after you’ve sent the email, review the results. Record the number of subscribers, average order value, click-through rates, day/time sent and any other useful information that will make you a better marketer. “You can only manage what you measure” the old business adage goes… and it’s particularly true if you want to sharpen up on the science of email marketing. Increasingly great responses = increasingly healthy business bank account!
